We are trained and experienced in
interventions ranging from setting up and running Early Intervention
Programs for special needs infants and children, to
systematic desensitization programs that enable children and adults
to overcome phobic and traumatic associations.
Early Intervention
Programs
The research into working successfully
with children who have been diagnosed with Autism or Pervasive
Developmental Disorder, clearly shows the importance of beginning
the work as early as possible. For example, research shows us
that it is much more effective to teach language skills to autistic
children in the first five
years of their development, rather than waiting until they are of
kindergarten age. The work usually begins in the home setting
and utilizes "tutors" and behavior consultants who are specially
trained to work with this population. We will use techniques
such as Discrete Trial Training to teach language and other skills
by breaking these skills down to their smallest component
parts, and then teaching them to the child by repetition and by
providing immediate positive reinforcement for
each correct response.
As the child grows older the tutor may begin accompanying them to
preschool, helping them to learn play skills and how to have
positive social interactions with their peers.
